Exam Questions
What are the requirements to sit the CIABC hair, esthetic or nail exams?
(a) Candidate must have practical and theoretical training
How many hours of training are required for the hair /esthetic and nail exams?
(a) 400 hours for Nails, 800 hours for Esthetics, 1500 hours of schooling or 2 years (3000 hours) of apprenticing for Hairdressing
Can school and apprenticed hours be combined in order to meet the necessary requirements for the hair exam?
(a) Yes
How far in advanced should an exam be booked?
(a) 5 to 6 weeks in advanced
What type of information should be provided for the booking of an exam?
(a) Candidate must have a completed Exam Application Form, proof of training (Photocopy of School Diploma), photocopy of photo ID and exam fee
Can estheticians and nail technicians apprentice and then challenge the exam?
(a) No
Can the candidate choose her exam date and then change it to a later date if she chooses and will there be a rescheduling fee?
(a) Yes, candidates can do choose the date and change the date, however, there is a rescheduling fee
What is the mannequin used for in the Hair Examination?
(a) Permanent Wave, Skip Wave or Finger Wave and the Roller Set must be completed on the mannequin
How long is the hair examination? Will the CIABC provide tools?
(a) Plan to spend 3.5 to 4 hours for the practical examination and 3 hours for the theory. CIABC does NOT provide tools. If a candidate comes to the exam unprepared, this will result in an automatic fail
Are there any nails and esthetic questions in the hair theory examination?
(a) No, however, there are skin questions related to the hair growth
Does the model have to stay for the entire examination?
(a) No. Once the practical exam in complete, the model is free to leave
What is the age limit for models? And will CIABC provide model?
(a) The model must be 16 years of age or older. The CIABC does NOT provide model
Can the candidate use his/her own daughter if she is under 16 years old?
(a) No
Can the candidate use a classmate who is not yet ready for the exam as a model?
(a) No
How long should the model’s hair be? How much hair should the candidate cut?
(a) The models hair should not be longer than 12 inches from the nape. Keep in mind the blow-dry and curling iron will be done on the same hair. Candidates are required to cut a minimum of one inch of hair from all sides
What type of perm should the candidate use?
(a) The perm solution Must be a none self-timing alkaline perm
Why size of perm rods should the candidate bring?
(a) Perm rods must be less than 1 inch in diameter
How long will it take to receive the exam results?
(a) 3-4 weeks
Who chooses, whether the candidate demonstrates a Finger Wave or Skip Wave?
(a) The Examiner
Are there any breaks during the exam?
(a) A break is given to the candidate once the practical exam is complete. This time should be used to have a quick bite to eat and clear the station of all equipment and supplies used during the practical examination. If a break is needed due to a medical condition, the examiner must be informed before the exam begins
What is the procedure for an Interpreter Exam?
(a) The Candidate must attempt the exam once on their own before an interpreter is allowed. If the Candidate does not pass the exam, an interpreter will be hired by the CIABC. Candidates are not allowed to hire their own interpreter. The fee for an interpreter is $50.00 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours plus an addition $5.00 for traveling expenses. There is also a $75.00 re-take fee required by the CIABC
What is the full capacity for a hair, esthetic or nail exam?
(a) 15 candidates
Can the candidate ask the examiner questions while performing the examination?
(a) Yes, however the type of question is limited and the examiner is not require to answer any question regarding exam results
Can an esthetic candidate use a model with permanent make up on her eye brows?
(a) No
Do the esthetic candidates have to do acrylic nails on their model?
(a) No he/she will do a basic manicure with polish application only
What type of uniform should I use for my hair / esthetic / nail exam?
(a) The candidate should wear all white for esthetics and nails with closed toe shoes and all black for hair with closed toe shoes
What is a ‘fast track’ exam and a ‘fully qualified' exam?
(a) Fast track means a person will specialize in a particular area of expertise, such as a Colour Technician, Waxing Technician or Gel Nail Technician. A fully qualified exam means a person is qualified to perform all areas of that particular trade
In what areas will the hair candidate be tested?
(a) General trade practices, Haircut, Permanent waving, Hair colouring, Skip or finger waves, Roller set, Blow dry, Curling iron, General theory, Colouring and bleaching theory
What is the difference between ITA and CIABC?
(a) ITA is a government office and the CIABC is a non profit membership based organization
How many times can a candidate retake an area of the exam that she failed?
(a) 3 times before we ask the candidate to go back to school, to continue training
Membership and Certification Questions
I last renewed my license in 2003, am I a member of the CIABC?
(a) You are a license holder but not a member of the CIABC. The CIABC is a not- for-profit voluntary association. To be a member, you must pay an annual fee
I last renewed my license before 2003, how can I obtain a Certificate of Qualification from the CIABC?
(a) Non-Members must pay $95.00 per size of the C of Q (full size or wallet size). If you are a current member in good standing the C of Q reprints are $20.00 per size. If you are not a member, but wish to become one, you may pay your annual due of $43.00 or $63.00 (depending on working status) and an additional $20.00 per size for the reprint
I have a US license, how can I get the BC Certificate of Qualification?
(a) The CIABC requires proof of training that is equivalent or greater to what is required in BC
I paid for my membership and C of Q two weeks ago, how long do I have to wait for the certificate to arrive in my mail?
(a) Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery of your certification package
I have a license from a foreign country; do I have to sit for the exam to get the Certificate of Qualification?
(a) The CIABC requires proof of training that is equivalent or greater to what is required in BC. Proof of training will then allow the candidate to sit for the CIABC exam
I need to make a name change, how can I get a new Certificate of Qualification under my new name?
(a) The CIABC requires proof of the legal name change. We require a copy of the marriage certificate, passport, citizenship card, birth certificate or driver’s license.
Who can apply for CIABC Membership?
(a) CIABC membership is for anyone who is within the Cosmetology Industry. Hairdressers, Estheticians, Nail Technicians, employees, business owners, instructors, wholesalers and dealers
